Summary
The Ninth Forth Modification Laboratory (FORML) Conference took place in Nov 1987, and its informal theme seemed to be BLOCKs vs text files. Attendees received copies of Tom Zimmer's PF Forth, which includes source files for dozens of utilities and includes a sophisticated file editor. The first Australian Forth Symposium in May 1988 will focus on productivity. The ANSI X3J14 Forth standards meeting in May 1988 will address such technical issues as vocabularies, flow of control, mass storage, and documentation requirements. The forthcoming "Dr. Dobb's Toolbook of Forth, Volume II" is an excellent anthology of papers on Forth programming techniques. "Object-Oriented Forth", a book by Dick Piuntain, extends Forth to include named objects, thereby increasing its readability and reusability. Commands for reading and writing data and text files from BLOCKs are listed.
