Summary
  • The benefits of learning to cross-compile fourth generation languages (4GL) to Cobol far outweigh the redundancy. The first benefit is Cobol's greater efficiency with computer resources. The second is applications portability. A proprietary 4GL used on a development machine must be duplicated for use on production machines in other locations; a cross-compiled program in Cobol, which is a non-proprietary ANSI standard, delivered from development is easier and more familiar. Porting cross-compiled Cobol programs will also be the more speed-efficient route when departmental processors, which tend to be slow, become significant 4GL platforms. Moreover, IBM continues to standardize Cobol for its products; the need to reduce dependancy on proprietary 4GL coupled with a specific DBMS is growing. The third benefit is the easier maintenance; Cobol is more familiar to programmers and has more available maintenance tools.
