Notes
  • In this paper I ask the question, whether the theory of organizational culture coined by Edgar H. Schein, can explain why there are more disturbance in some classrooms than in other. On the theoretical basis of Pierre Bourdieu, I argue that Schein’s theory in fact faces key problems in doing exactly that. First and foremost, Schein bases his theory on the idea that groups are held together by culture, defined as a non-conflictual entity, bases on agreement, historically formed through a process where a member of the group proposed continually successful ideas, helping the group solve common problems. Hereafter this person is awarded with authority from the group, allowing him/her to lead the group. I argue that the problems that the theory face, are better solved by using Bourdieu’s “theory”, and that the terms “field”, “habitus”, “capital”, “symbolic violence” etc., more successfully explains the aforementioned phenomena. Also, Scheins theory faces moral problems, since he advocates a form of “cultural relativism”, that according to multiple sources, and my self, is a seriously problematic stance.
