The relationship between managerial characteristics and corporate
performance is examined. Data were collected from 953 top managers of
150 companies in five US industries. The results indicate that in all
industries studied, the companies with the best performance have
significantly different management profiles than companies that perform
poorly. The characteristics of managers of top-performing companies were
similar in all industries studied.
