  • The Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Latter-day Saint History was created in 1980, after it was decided that a university would provide a better setting for research and publication. Before then it was a Church Historian--s Office, reorganized into the Historical Department of the Church headed by Leonard Arrington. The primary responsibility of the Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Latter-day Saint History is to research, write and publish Latter-day Saint history from the perspective of faith and according to the highest scholarly standards. The Institute Faculty also teach courses in history, LDS Church history, and other disciplines related to their fields of expertise and advise students whose major papers, theses, and dissertations address Mormon history topics. This collection, containing correspondence, newspaper articles, reports, and other material concerning the Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Latter-day Saint History has been separated into three series: Administrative Files, Primary History, and the Women of the Covenant. ; The Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Latter-day Saint History is a center for the scholarly study of the history, people, institutions, and culture of the Latter-day Saints from the perspective of faith. The primary responsibility of Brigham Young University--s Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Latter-day Saint History is to research, write, and publish Latter-day Saint history from the perspective of faith and according to the highest scholarly standards. Institute faculty edit collections of significant documents and write interpretive histories and biographies with an aim to publish works that meet the highest professional standards and inform both academic and general audiences. Its mission, as a research organization, is to use the materials of history and the tools of scholarship to research, write, and publish works about the Latter-day Saint past that will be of significance to other scholars and to Latter-day Saints generally. Its personnel are historians who seek to understand and, where appropriate, emphasize the religious context of LDS history, including the vision and faith that underlie many significant events. Under the direction of the appropriate departments, Smith Institute faculty also teach courses in history, LDS Church history, and other disciplines related to their fields of expertise and advise students whose major papers, theses, and dissertations address Mormon history topics. The institute seeks to facilitate research by other scholars in LDS Church history as well. Limited support for research and publication in LDS Church history is available to faculty members from other departments within the university, based on an exchange of teaching and research assignments with institute faculty. The Institute also fosters connections among a broad range of scholars interested in Mormon history by sponsoring grants, fellowships, lectures, and scholarly seminars. The process of the creation of the JFSI all began in 1972 when the Church Historian--s Office was reorganized into the Historical Department of the Church, and Leonard J. Arrington, a historian from Utah State University, was called to head the new history division. He gathered a staff and over the next eight years launched an ambitious program of scholarly publication, producing numerous books and articles, contributing frequently to Church publications, and launching an extensive oral history program. In 1980 it was decided that a university would provide a better setting for research and publication, so the history division became the Smith Institute and was moved to BYU. Arrington continued to serve as director until 1986, when Ronald K. Esplin succeeded him. In 1999 the Institute--s organization was broadened to include an executive committee, chaired by Richard L. Bushman, to direct the Institute--s scholarly program. The Institute became a center with expanded resources that helped support a network of Latter-day Saint scholars. To promote the publication and marketing of quality history and biography, the Institute added a publishing division under John W. Welch of BYU Studies and formalized an alliance with Deseret Book Company. A revitalized collaboration with the Historical Department of the Church increased resources available for documentary editing, one of the Institute--s major emphases. Although Smith Institute faculty members teach history and Church history courses, their principal assignment remains the scholarly research and writing of the Latter-day Saint past. From time to time, other faculty members serve with the Institute on a temporary basis. This collection is divided into three series. The first of the three details the administrative files of the Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Latter-day Saint History through corporate minutes, reports, schedules, agendas, photographs, letters, programs and clippings. These administrative files deal with faculty reports, symposiums, lectures, grants and projects of the various programs and researches of the Joseph Fielding Smith Institute for Latter-day Saint History. The second series is the history of the Primary Organization of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Through clippings, programs and documents it outlines what the Primary Organization was, and how it began in the late 1800's. It details the gradual growth and the monumental moments in the Primary History. The Last series in this compilation of documents, letters, clippings, programs, and notes is a publication called Women of the Covenant. It deals with the beginnings of the Relief Society Organization, the women who organized it and what type of women made up this establishment. It outlines the beginnings of the group in Nauvoo, Illinois with Joseph Smith presiding and Emma Smith becoming the first General President of the Relief Society. The collection then proceeds through the years detailing the presidencies and what each group accomplished over the years. This collection was maintained in the order it was received in. The collection appears to be organized topically.
