  • Merrill J. Bateman served as president of Brigham Young University from January 1996 through April 2003. The collection includes correspondence with university vice presidents and deans of colleges, General Authorities of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the president of Brigham Young University-Hawaii, and others. Major subjects include university relations, admissions and records, athletics, the Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies, the honor and dress codes, and other related issues. Also includes minutes to Board of Trustees meetings. ; Merrill J. Bateman served as president of Brigham Young University from January 1, 1996 to April 30, 2003.Born in Lehi and raised in American Fork, Utah, he earned a bachelor's degree in economics at the University of Utah in 1960 and went on to receive his doctorate in that subject from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1965. President Bateman was a Danforth Fellow (1960-64) and Woodrow Wilson Fellow (1960-61). He was inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa honor societies in 1960 at the University of Utah.His academic assignments include lecturer in economics at the University of Ghana, 1963; assistant professor of economics at the U.S. Air Force Academy, 1964-1967; associate professor of economics at BYU, 1967-1969; professor of economics at BYU, 1969-1971; and dean of the BYU School of Management, 1975-1979. He also has published several articles in the field of economics.President Bateman headed his own consulting and capital management companies. Before rejoining the BYU faculty as a dean, he was an executive with Mars, Inc., in England and the United States (1971-1975).Elder Bateman was called to serve in the Second Quorum of the Seventy in June of 1992. As part of that assignment, he was president of the Asia North Area. He has served the Church also as a missionary, bishop, stake high councilor, stake president and regional representative. He also helped lay the foundation for the Church's establishment in Ghana and Nigeria.He was sustained as Presiding Bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 2, 1994. The First Presidency of the Church released him from that calling when they appointed him president of BYU. However, he continued to serve the Church as a General Authority, filling a position in the First Quorum of the Seventy. Upon his release from Brigham Young University, Elder Bateman was called to the Sunday School General Presidency.He is married to Marilyn Scholes Bateman and they are the parents of seven children: four boys and three girls. They have 28 grandchildren. The Merrill J. Bateman Presidential records are divided into five series: I. Materials about Bateman's Presidency (2003), II. Correspondence (January 1996-April 2003), III. Speeches (1996-2003), IV. Board of Trustees Files (1996-2001), and V. Alphabetical Files (1996-2001).The Materials about Bateman's Presidency series (2003) contains newspaper articles and reports summarizing Bateman's presidency.The Correspondence (January 1996-April 2003) series documents Merrill J. Bateman--s activities as president of Brigham Young University. This series includes correspondence between Bateman and university vice presidents, General Authorities, General Counsel, the University Provost, Deans, and Department Chairs. Subjects covered include assemblies/​devotionals/​forums on campus, athletics, admissions and records, student life, faculty, colleges and departments, university relations, funding raising, as well as professional associations that Bateman belonged to.The Speeches (1996-2003) series documents the numerous speeches and talks given by Merrill J. and Marilyn S. Bateman. The majority of the speeches and talks were given on the Brigham Young University campus.The Board of Trustees Files (1996-2001) series contains minutes and agendas from Board of Trustees meetings. These files are restricted indefinitely.The Alphabetical Files (1996-2001) series documents Merrill J. Bateman's responses to campus officials and others. It also contains correspondence received by Bateman. The Merrill J. Bateman Brigham Young University President--s Records arrived in the University Archives in two separate accessions--one from University Records Management and one formthe University President's Office. The records were in a useable state and their original order was maintained. The Bateman Presidential records are divided into five series: I. Materials about Bateman's Presidency (2003), II. Correspondence (January 1996-April 2003), III. Speeches (1996-2003), IV. Board of Trustees Files (1996-2001), and V. Alphabetical Files (1996-2001).The Materials about Bateman's Presidency (2003) series consists of .1 linear ft. The materials are maintained in the order that they were received and are arranged chronologically.The Correspondence (January 1996-April 2003) series consists of 38.5 linear ft and is divided into eight sub-series. The sub-series are: Correspondence (January-July 1996), Correspondence (August 1996-July 1997), Correspondence (August 1997-July 1998), Correspondence (August 1998-July 1999), Correspondence (August 1999-July 2000), Correspondence (August 2000-July 2001), Correspondence (July 2001-July 2002), and Correspondence (August 2002-April 2003). Each sub-series is divided into sub-sub series. The sub-sub series include: Administration, General Counsel, Provost, Vice-Presidents, Human Resources, Financial Services, University Relations, Admissions and Records, Student Life, Faculty, Colleges and Departments, Associations, BYU Media Organizations, Other Universities, Physical Plant, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Alphabetical Files. The sub-sub series are not always in the same order in each sub-series, but are generally represented. The files are maintained in the order that they were received from Records Management and the University President's Office. The correspondence is arranged chronologically in all of the sub-sub series except the Alphabetical Files in which files are organized chronologically by year and alphabetically within each year.The Speeches (1996-2003) series consists of 1.4 linear ft and is divided into two sub-series: Merrill J. Bateman and Marilyn S. Bateman. Both sub-series are organized chronologically.The Board of Trustees Files (1996-2001) series consists of 2.5 linear ft. and is organized chronologically. These files are restricted indefinitely.The Alphabetical Files (1996-2001) series consists of 3.5 linear ft. and is organized chronologically and thereafter alphabetically.
