He actively participated in Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) activities, academics, and high school athletics. He was blessed with a good mind and attended the University of Utah until he left for his mission to Argentina in 1959. He continued his education after returning from his mission in 1961. On 12 June 1962, he married Cheryl Larson, his high school sweetheart, and they had five children: Thomas Rex, Ann Marie, Jennifer, Gregory, and Peter.During his mission to Argentina, Ted discovered his passion for Hispanic cultures. Upon his return in 1961, he resumed his university education, majoring in Spanish Literature. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Utah in 1963 and upon graduation, received a scholarship to study at the University of California-Los Angeles. Four years later, he received his Ph.D from UCLA, while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average.Ted found his first job at the University of Oklahoma and was an assistant professor of Spanish literature. He taught at Oklahoma for a few years and then transferred to teach at the University of Wisconsin's Spanish department. In 1972, he again transferred universities and joined the Brigham Young University faculty, where he taught Spanish-American literature and culture.
