Wesley Parkinson Lloyd was born on 16 June 1904 to Charles Edward Lloyd and Lucy Smart Parkinson in Ogden, Utah. When he was young, he revealed many facets of a promising student and scholar. It was not unusual for him to be "head of his class." His mother, Lucy Parkinson, was Dean of Women at Ricks College (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also called LDS or Mormon Church) following the death of his father in 1926. In years to come, Wesley would follow the steps of his mother and become a dean at BYU.Wesley attended elementary and secondary schools in St. Anthony, Idaho and Salt Lake City. He attended BYU, and while there, met his wife, Lillie Murdock. They were married on 30 December 1926. They had three sons, but only two lived to adulthood: Kent and Gary. Also during his stay at BYU, he was a star football, basketball, and track athlete, and a successful debater and public speaker. He graduated from BYU with his B.S. in 1927 and his M.S. in 1934. He then proceeded to get his doctorate at Chicago University, graduating in 1937.Commencing in 1937, Wesley was a member of the BYU faculty. He retired from BYU in 1969, where he served as Dean of the Graduate School from 1960-1969; Dean of Students, 1944-1960; Dean of Men, 1937-1944; and Professor of Education and chairman of several academic departments. He was internationally recognized for his work in higher education. He traveled through Europe, Asia, and South America, consulting with educators from 30 nations. After retirement from BYU in 1969, he was named Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the International University in San Diego. From 1972-1976, he was Director of California Western College. From 1974-1977, he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Center for Educational Leadership, based in Los Angeles. He died on 7 March 1977 in La Jolla, California.Source: Faculty File of Wesley Parkinson Lloyd, UA 909, L. Tom Perry Special Collections.
