Alma Helaman Hale, Jr. was born on 11 June 1857 in Grantsville, Tooele County, Utah to Alma Helaman Hale and Sarah Elizabeth Walker. When he was four years old, his mother died in childbirth, leaving him and a sister motherless. His father later remarried Sarah A. Clark, who would have ten children and be loved as their own mother by Alma and his sister.Growing up, Alma's schooling was rather limited, having only each winter time to go to school and learn the same books. The last two winters of his schooling were in Salt Lake City at the Deseret University. When he was twenty years old, he began to work for wages. Because he had a love for horses and stock, he went to Skull Valley and worked at breaking horses and carrying loads of stock. In 1883, Alma and his Uncle Sol were visited by the Stake Presidency who wished Alma's Uncle to be in the Stake Presidency, and Alma to take his place as Bishop. However, Alma was not yet married. So the Stake President said, "Brother Alma, if I were you I would get married." That night, Alma went home and prayed that he might meet a woman to be a good companion for him. He had a vision of the girl he was to marry, and not long after met her. Her name was Elizabeth Precinda Hendricks. They were married 1 October 1884.Alma served a mission to the British Isles. It was one of the hardest times of his life, as he was poor, had two children, and was leaving his sick wife. But as he displayed faith, all was well with his family and finances. When he returned home from his mission, he and his family settled in Preston, Idaho. After a year, they moved to Marysville. They would eventually have ten children, all growing to adulthood. Alma died on 9 April 1938 in Logan, Utah. The collection contains the journal of Alma Helaman Hale, Jr., 1 January 1891 - 28 August 1909; newspaper clippings and documents; and draft of Alma H.
