  • Miles Anderson (1795-1896) fought in the War of 1812 and enlisted in the Georgia Militia. He married Nancy Pace in 1821 and they had nine children. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1842 and emigrated to Salt Lake City, Utah in 1851. He served a mission to Las Vegas with his son, William Rucker from 1856-1857. This collection contains 2 diaries covering briefly related experiences and financial dealings of Anderson during the period of 1842-1856, from Nauvoo to the Utah Territory. Also includes patriarchal blessings given by Hyrum Smith and John Smith, as well as other documents and correspondence. Two diaries, family correspondence, patriarchal blessings, family land deeds, Nauvoo Legion Certificate, and War of 1812 pension certificate. Miles Anderson was born on 30 October 1795, in Wilks County, Georgia. He left Georgia when he was young and went to Tennessee. He fought in the War of 1812 and enlisted in the Georgia Militia as a drummer. He entered the military 12 October 1814 as a private and finished his duties 15 March 1815 at the rank of major.Miles married Nancy Pace on 9 August 1821 in Tennessee. Eight of his nine children were born in Tennessee. One child, William Rucker Anderson, was born in Nauvoo, Illinois. Miles Anderson was converted to Mormonism (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or LDS Church) in Tennessee and on 18 April 1841 he started with his family to Nauvoo, Illinois. On 25 May 1842, Miles was baptized by the Prophet Joseph Smith in Nauvoo.The Miles Anderson family emigrated to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1851 and in October 1852, they settled in Parowan, Utah. On 9 February 1856, Miles was ordained a high priest by George A. Smith, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. In March 1856, Miles and his son, William Rucker, left to serve a mission to the Indians in Las Vegas, Nevada. They returned from their mission on 2 May 1857.Miles Anderson died at Beaver, Utah, on 23 July 1876. He was a farmer, millwright, and carpenter.(Taken from the "Life History of Miles Anderson," in possession of donor.); The Miles Anderson Collection includes two diaries covering briefly related experiences and financial dealings of Anderson during the period of 1842-1856, when the Latter-day Saints's lived in Nauvoo, Illinois and then made their exodus across the Great Plains, and finally settled Utah Territory. Other items include family correspondence, two patriarchal blessings of Miles Anderson, family land deeds, and Miles Anderson?s War of 1812 pension certificate.
