Graduated from the University of Utah. Leona was elected vice-president in the first year and president in the second year.1946Elected president of the American Camping Association (Wasatch Section) and the UAHPER.1950Received her doctorate in Education from Columbia University.1950, 1965, 1971Named as one of the outstanding women faculty at BYU.1959Elected president of WSPECW.1964Addressed the entire student body of BYU at a devotional assembly. Groundbreaking ceremony for the Richards Building, located on the Brigham Young University campus. She was involved in the planning of this building about ten years before approval was granted for its construction.1964-1966President of the National Association for Physical Education of College Women (NAPECW).1966-1967President of the American Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (AAHPER).1967-1968Assigned to be a project planner for a contract made between UNESCO and ICHPER. Her final report was entitled, "A Case study in Educational Planning for Physical Education, Health, and Recreation for School Age Youth in and out of School." Leona traveled to Chile to perform this study and lived there for two months.1967Received the BYU Alumni Distinguished Service Award.1968One of the first two women ever to serve as a member of the board of directors of the United States Olympic Committee.1969Received the second R. Tait McKenzie Award in recognition of exemplary and distinguished service.1971Enshrined as a member of the Helms Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame in recognition of her "noteworthy contributions to athletics for youth."1972Only woman appointed to the Bi-National Commission for professional interchange with the United States and Mexico. Chairman of the Provo River - Park Development Committee.1974Retired, but continued to teach part-time at BYU. Received the Luther Halsey Gulick Award.1977Received the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Teaching Award.1978Director of the National Olympic Academy III at BYU.1979 Mar.Received the Provo BPO Elks "Senior Citizen of the Year" award.1979 Oct.Named the first recipient of the Dorothy S. Ainsworth Honor Award presented for "distinguished meritorious service to the profession of international health, physical education, recreation and sports" by the International Council on Health, Physical Education and Recreation.1980 Mar.Donated three hundred thousand dollars to BYU dance and women's physical education.1980 June 30Leona passed away at age seventy-one in her Provo home, of natural causes.
