Notes
  • Benjamin Cluff Jr. was a scholar, educational administrator, explorer, businessman, plantation owner, and president of Brigham Young Academy from 1892 to 1903. He served as a Mormon missionary in Hawaii, 1878-1882, and led an expedition of BYA students and faculty to Central America in 1900. This collection consists of four diaries. The earliest of these, 1881-1886, covers the time when Cluff was a student at Brigham Young Academy. The volume covering 1886-1900 relates his experiences as a student at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and as president of Brigham Young Academy. The remaining two volumes, 1 Jan.-21 Aug. 1904 and 1906-1909, describe his activities and experiences as a plantation owner in Tabasco, Mexico. Benjamin Cluff, Jr. was born in Provo, Utah on February 7, 1858. He spent his early years in Logan, Utah. At age seven, he went with his family to Hawaii where his father was serving as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After five years, he returned to Logan and, in 1877, attended the newly founded Brigham Young Academy in Provo, Utah, remaining there until 1886 except for serving his own mission to Hawaii from 1878 to 1882. In 1886, he traveled to Ann Arbor, Michigan to study at the university there. He completed his master's degree there in 1894 and was one of the first Mormons to graduate from an eastern university. He became the president of the Brigham Young Academy in 1892 upon the retirement of Karl G. Maeser. Under his direction as president, white and blue were selected as the school colors; class organizations were inaugurated; Founder's Day was instituted; a student loan association was organized; the first summer school was started; the Alumni Association was founded; and the first non-Mormon faculty member was hired. At Cluff's recommendation, the name of the school was changed to Brigham Young University in 1903.In 1900, Cluff led an expedition of students and faculty to Central America, hoping to both upgrade the museum and scientific work of the academy as well as place serious learning on a firmer foundation at the school. He resigned from the presidency in 1903, and accepted a job managing a plantation in Tabasco, Mexico. After many years there, he moved to southern California and went into business for himself. He died June 16, 1948. The diaries recently acquired by Brigham Young University cover important years in Cluff's life. Volume One:January 1, 1881 to November 28, 1886 deals with his own Hawaiian mission, his first marriage to a daughter of David John, his work as the Utah Stake Mutual Improvement Association President, and his school work during the early years at the Brigham Young Academy; Cluff placed two original letters into this diary following page 120--the first is dated April 8, 1890 and is from J. M. Tanner, and the second is dated April 9, 1890 and is from David John.Volume Two:its coverage is uneven, but it details his study at the University of Michigan beginning December 14, 1886, and other events and reminiscences to the eve of his departure on the South American Expedition in June, 1900; it then picks up his life after he returned from Columbia, revealing the goings-on at the Academy before his resignation in 1903 (November 1 - December 23, 1903).Volume Three:this volume covers January 1 to August 21, 1904 when he was in Mexico.Volume Four:covers December 24, 1906 to January 6, 1909, also in Mexico.
