Notes
  • Sociologist, historian, educator, and author. Photocopies of research notes and drafts of chapters of the book "Isn't One Wife Enough?" The originals are housed in the Garett Theological Seminary Library. This work is considered to be the first serious study of Mormon polygamy done by a trained sociologist. In the published version of the book, Young changed the names of the characters he wrote about. But in his notes the correct names are available. Kimball Young was born in Provo, Utah 26 October 1893. He received his A.B. degree form Brigham Young University in 1915; his A.M. degree from the University of Chicago in 1918; and his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1921. Specializing in Sociology, he taught at the University of Oregon, 1920-26; University of Wisconsin, 1926-40; Queens College, Flushing, New York, 1940-47; and at Northwestern University from 1947 to his retirement. He died in 1972.He authored Sociology, A Study of Society and Culture (New York: American Book Co., 1942), plus a number of other books and articles. His Isn't One Wife Enough? (New York: Holt and Co., 1954) is a detailed sociological study of Mormon plural marriage. To protect his sources he hid the identity of individuals and families discussed in his study. His papers and research notes were deposited in the Garrett Theological Seminary Library at Northwestern University. These research notes are invaluable for more fully researching the topic of Mormon plural marriage in general, as well as Kimball Young's study in particular. This collection consists of five archival boxes of the research notes and drafts of chapters of Kimball Young for his book Isn't One Wife Enough? (New York: Holt and Co., 1954). This collection is comprised of photocopies of the originals housed in the Garrett Theological Seminary Library. They were obtained by Jessie Embry and donated by her to the BYU Archives. Additional copies of some parts of the collection are also available at the Henry E. Huntington Library, San Marino, California.Young's volume was one of the first serious studies of Mormon polygamy by a trained sociologist. But because he avoided naming the individuals he spoke about, the researcher today must use his research notes to learn their identity, because, unlike the published book, these notes identify the informant. Thus this collection is a rich gathering of source material on Mormon plural marriage. This collection is essentially the research material originally gathered by Jessie Embry as part of her research on Mormon plural marriage. Attached is an item-by-item inventory, all of which comes from the Kimball Young Collection. It has been organized alphabetically (to Box 3) with drafts of Young's book and James Hulett's research notes at the end (Boxes 4 and 5). As a student of Young's, Hulett wrote a dissertation on Mormon polygamy.
