  • Mormon woman and plural wife of Joseph Smith, the first president of the Mormon Church. ; Handwritten originals and photocopies of correspondence, autobiographies, speeches, articles, patriarchal blessings, histories, and a statement relating to her marriage to Joseph Smith. The correspondents include Apostles in the Mormon Church and many prominent Mormon women. ; Mary Elizabeth Rollins was born in Lima, Livingston County, New York, April 9, 1918, daughter of John P. Rollins and Keziah Van Benthuysen. She was one of the earliest converts to Mormonism, and a plural wife of the Prophet Joseph Smith. In 1828 she moved with her family to Kirtland, Ohio, where they lived with her uncle Algernon Sidney Gilbert, and in October 1830 she was baptized a member of the L.D.S. Church. Along with her mother, sister Caroline, and brother Henry, she moved to Independence, Jackson County, Missouri, where she encountered many of the persecutions suffered by the Mormons in Missouri.A particular incident of interest was her involvement in saving some unbound printed pages of the 1833 Book of Commandments with her sister. While a mob was tearing down the W.W. Phelps home and press, the girls grabbed some of the pages and ran for protection to a nearby cornfield, saving the pages for future publication.Mary E. Rollins married Adam Lightner of Liberty, Clay County, Missouri in 1835. Adam Lightner was not a Mormon, but he was a good friend to Joseph Smith and the Mormons all of his life. They moved from place to place in Missouri and later to Minnesota, and eventually went west arriving in the Salt Lake Valley in 1863. The Lightners settled in Minersville, Utah, where Mary was one of the first school teachers.Mary E. R. Lightner was asked to speak frequently to various groups including gatherings of General Authorities, prominent citizens, and the 1905 graduating class of Brigham Young University. In 1902 she wrote a statement concerning her sealing to the Prophet Joseph Smith many years earlier in Nauvoo, Illinois. She died in 1915, at the age of 97. Handwritten originals and photocopies of correspondence, autobiographies, speeches, articles, patriarchal blessings, histories, and a statement relating to her marriage to Joseph Smith. The correspondents include Apostles in the Mormon Church and many prominent Mormon women. Some of the originals are found in the Historical Department of the L.D.S. (Mormon) Church in Salt Lake City, Utah.
