Summary
  • The solution to the problem of terrorism can focus either on those who have already become terrorists, or on the conditions that result in the emergence of groups and individuals that may support and/or be involved in political violence. The relevant knowledge emerges at an intersection of different discourses reflecting the interests and views of various stakeholders and groups. Social sciences are one of the providers of such discourses and conceptual frameworks; media and everyday commonsensical (collective) consciousness being the other two major influences. The use of social science knowledge in practice, therefore, requires an assessment of this knowledge in terms of its impact upon the balance of narrow professional and organisational interests and goals as well as broader social interests and long-term strategic goals. It also requires critical reflection upon the discourses as a social practice that may either problematise or naturalise certain interpretations and categorisations of reality. In order to develop proactive and constructive strategies aimed at preventing terrorism, different levels of analysis (societal, group and individual) need to be brought together. The development of such strategies requires an assessment of the means and resources used for mobilising certain groups for action, revealing the actors’ interests and, most importantly, identifying those groups that are successfully integrated into the larger society, and promoting their experience. The social constructivist concept of identity can help bring together the micro- and macro-levels of analysis. The adoption of this approach can help develop proactive strategies aiming to prevent the emergence of threatening identities. The social constructivist concept of identity encourages researchers and practitioners focus on the social mechanisms of identity formation and proliferation, and the cultural resources that may be used by interested actors, including such resources as history and religion. At the same time, it enables the use of knowledge from the broader socio-economic, historical, cultural and discursive contexts (e.g., research on immigrant integration, youth cultures, and media constructions).
