Summary
  • It is shown that surface amine groups on aramid and extended-chain polyethylene (ECPE) fibres react chemically with an epoxy-resin matrix. Strong evidence is provided to the effect that the improvement in interlaminar properties of ECPE/epoxy-resin composites after ammonia-plasma treatment is a direct result of covalent bonding between amine groups at the fibre surface and epoxy groups in the resin. This also explains the improvement in interlaminar properties for aramid/epoxy composites. Here the improvement is restricted by the fine structure of the aramid fibres and cohesive failure appears to be the ultimate determinant of fibre/matrix adhesion.
