An analysis of the construction of 'Indianness' in anthropology and comparative sociology is presented, as also the role of anthropology in identifying the West as 'modern' and the Indian identity as 'traditional'. It is suggested that the extensive use of ideas such as caste, kin and village in an Indian context and modern themes such as class, urbanisation and migration for a Western identity in anthropological texts has contributed to the notion.
