Summary
Only five years after the uncontrolled conquest of Port Phillip began, the terrible consequences were obvious even to distant government officials. Governor Gipps was concerned about the suffering of the Aborigines but consoled himself with refining the thesis that there was nothing the government could do, even suggesting to the Colonial Office.
