This fact sheet provides definitions and examples of the subtypes of child maltreatment, including physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional and psychological abuse, neglect, and the witnessing of family violence. However, although it is useful to distinguish between the different subtypes of child maltreatment, subtypes seldom occur in isolation.
