Benjamin Cribb was born in 1807 in England. His first marriage, on the Isle of Man in 1839, was to Elizabeth Bridson. He and Elizabeth and their three children arrived in Queensland in 1849 on the Chaseley. He started Cribb & Foote merchants as the London Stores in 1849. Elizabeth died in 1852 and he married his second wife, Clarissa Foote, in 1853. He became an Alderman for Ipswich and Member of the Legislative Assembly in the 1860s and 1870s. He was a trustee for Ipswich Boys' Grammar School and involved in the School of Arts and Congregational Church. His home in Brisbane was Kingsholme in Newstead. He built Gooloowan on Denmark Hill, Ipswich. He died in Ipswich in 1874. (Description adapted from one supplied with photograph.)
