Summary
  • Ene-Mai Reinpuu was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen's Birthday honours list, 1998, for service to the Estonian community for more than 30 years, particularly as president and honorary secretary of the Estonian Society of Adelaide, and as honorary secretary of the Council of Estonian Societies in Australia. Ene-Mai Reinpuu, nee Prima, was born in Tartu, Estonia in 1932. At 12 years old she left Estonia as a refugee with her parents fleeing the threat of Russian invasion. They arrived in South Australia in 1949. She went to Emmanuel College. Her parents were both professionals but were unable to work in their fields. Her mother was President of the Estonian Ladies Auzillary and Ene-Mai was active in a theatre group, mixed choir, folk dancing and the Brown owl guides. At 20 years old she married Villi Reinpuu, also from Estonia and they had two children. She works within the Estonian community in South Australia, organising and participating in the many social and cultural activities of the community, and providing support for its members. SA had 800 to 1000 Estonians and they bought Estonia House in North Adelaide. In 1990 she was an international delegate to the Congress of Estonia which was held in Estonia. Her work has also extended to support for the independance movement in Estonia and fundraising for an Estonian National Museum. She received a medal from the Estonian National Museum in 1997.
