Summary
  • Since the signing of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Australian government has initiated several measures to safeguard the interests and well being of children. Queensland was the first state to establish an independent statutory body, in 1996, and since then each state and territory has also established independent commissions or guardians. This fact sheet outlines the role and duties of child commissioners, and explains the differences between the various offices in each state and territory.
