For nine long years the Greeks had been at war with Troy. They had come to win back Helen, the wife of Greek King Menelaus, whom Paris, son of the king of Troy had stolen from him. The Iliad tells of the tenth year of war when Achilles quarrels with King Agamemnon, with disastrous consequences for the Greeks.
