  • National President of the RSL. Alexander George William (Bill) Keys was born in Sydney in 1923. During World War II Keys served with the Australian Imperial Force in New Guinea and Borneo, where he was involved in the Battle of Tarakan. Keys also served in the Korean War and in 1952 he was awarded the Military Cross (MC) for his service with the Australian infantry. In 1947, before the Korean conflict, Keys was elected to the New South Wales Council of the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL). He served as national secretary of the RSL from 1961 before becoming president, a position he retained until 1986. Keys was also international president of the Federation of Korean War Veterans Associations. In 1970 Keys was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his service as secretary of the RSL and nine years later he became Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire. In 1988 he was made a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) for service to the community, particularly ex-service and service personnel. Keys died in Queanbeyan, New South Wales in 2000.
