Biography
  • The Proscenia Theatre was formed in 1962 and operated as a semi-professional company. A central figure was William (Bill) Abernethy, a solicitor and driving force in the Theatre's ongoing financial, legal and aesthetic affairs. Abernethy's driving passion was light opera and musical theatre, in particular Gilbert and Sullivan productions, though with an unconventional approach. A number of young people who later featured in the Australian arts scene became members of the company during its existence, including John Dudley, David Russell, James McCarthy, John Milson, Don Crosby, Rick Billinghurst, Richard Divall and Jim Sharman.
