Summary
In nineteenth-century 'Wessex', beautiful heiress Bathesheba Everdene is courted by three men. Two of them, faithless Seargant Troy and repressed Mr. Boldwood, bring violence and scandal into her community, while the third, tender Gabriel Oak, offers her a life of rustic happiness. Perhaps the most humorous of Hardy's novels, though the themes of suffering and betrayal are evident.
