Biography
  • George Woodroffe Goyder was born in London on 24 June 1826. When the family moved to Glasgow, George joined an engineering firm and studied surveying. His sister emigrated to Sydney and George followed her in 1848 but later settled in South Australia. In 1851 he married Frances May Smith and they had nine children. He had joined the civil service as a draftsman and became chief clerk in the Lands and Survey Department in July 1853, then became Assistant Surveyor-General and Surveyor-General from 29 May 1861, a position he held until the end of 1893. Chairman of the railways commission 1874-75, and of the Forest Board 1875-83. In 1865 he mapped 'the line of demarcation between that portion of the country where the rainfall has extended, and that where the drought prevailed'. In 1867 he admitted that this line, known as Goyder's Line, separated, to a certain extent, lands suitable for agriculture and those fit only for grazing. He died at Aldgate, 2 November 1898.
