Notes
  • Additionally, a one-page letter (item I-48) possibly dating from the mid-18th century is found in this collection.
  • Written in various hands in 17th century Russian "skoropisʹ."
  • Forty-eight scrolls, each approx. 6 inches wide and from approx. 6 inches to 67 feet long (varying from one to 58 sheets in length). Composed of sheets of handmade, mostly cream-colored paper of irregular length pasted together at horizontal seams. Paper displays a variety of watermarks, mostly at left edge. Ink colors vary from black to faded brown. Some scrolls have inscriptions on verso. Paper shows a variety of discolorations and ink has eaten through in some places. Beginning in 1983 the LC Conservation Office washed the scrolls in a strengthening solution and repaired holes and frayed edges with Japanese rice paper. Cf. Memorandum to Peter Waters, Conservation Office, from Theodore Stanley, Paper Conservator, Nov. 3, 1989: Conservation treatment status of Law Library's Russian scroll collection.
  • Box 1 (60 cm. x 21 cm. x 8 cm.) contains 13 scrolls rolled in 12 paper wrappers (scrolls I-4 and I-16 are rolled together). Box 2 (46 cm. x 25 cm. x 6 cm.) contains 20 scrolls laid flat in folders. Boxes 3 (46 cm. x 20 cm. x 6 cm.), 4 (21 cm. x 24 cm. x 10 cm.), and 5 (26 cm. x 20 cm. x 8 cm.) contain respectively 10, 2, and 3 scrolls, each rolled in a paper wrapper. Scrolls were arranged in boxes by the LC Conservation Office.
  • Numbers on paper wrappers were provided by Andrei Pliguzov in 1995 and are keyed to a chronological list and description of the content of the scrolls in a finding aid: The collection of manuscript scrolls and other early Russian materials in the Law Library of Congress by Viacheslav Kozliakov and Andrei Pliguzov.
  • Acquired by LC in 1935. Item I-16 has pencilled accession number 7202/1694.
