  • Drawings, caricatures, manuscript verses, notes and letters by Rudyard Kipling sent to Edna Taylor Hill. Includes manuscript letter written by Mrs. Hill dated June 26, 1929 describing the collection and typewritten list of contents ([4] p.) Also includes covers from the 1888 Indian Railway issues of "The phantom rickshaw", "The Story of the Gadsby's" and "Under the deodars". Includes sketches and manuscripts by Kipling made while on voyages from India to America and from America to London in 1889, referred to by Mrs. Hill as the "Sea to sea trip". Also includes autograph manuscript poem to accompany a gift from Mrs. Hill to her godchild, drafts of other verses including autograph manuscripts of "A celebrity at home", "The song of the women", "The Night of power", "L'Envoi", "To these people", an incomplete "Turnover", limericks and other fragmentary verses. Also includes one portrait photograph of Lord Dufferin, Viceroy of India in 1884 and accompanying caricature drawn by Kipling.

  • Includes materials cited by J.M. Stewart, Kipling, a bibliographical catalogue, p. 540-541: "I cannot write, I cannot think", 16 lines of verse presented to Mrs. S.A. Hill in March 1889; three limericks written on board the S.S. City of Peking in May 1889; "In the City of Berlin" manuscript poem written by Kipling on the back of the ships menu for September 25, 1889; "The diary of the thing that happened" (manuscript purporting to be the diary of a passenger at sea written on ship's stationery of the S.S. City of Berlin, dated September 25, 1889) and Euchre limerick.
