Summary
  • The bulk of this collection is correspondence, over 800 letters, which touch on personal and business matters, including the death of Coburn's wife, exhibitions and sale of paintings, commissions, Nadine Amadio's monograph on the artist, real estate transactions, publishing royalties and other issues related to the artist and his work. The papers also include two important early press scrapbooks and two albums of photographs of Coburn's art.
Biography
  • Queensland born artist John Coburn is celebrated for his distinctive style of abstraction, using bold and decorative shapes, simply designed and painted in glowing colours. Depicting the beauty of nature and the spirituality of landscape, Coburn has refined a subtle yet powerful symbolic language in the form of large-scale paintings and tapestries and vivid screenprints. He is perhaps best known for his designs of two large tapestries for the Sydney Opera House curtains, and a series of seven for the John F. Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts, Washington. Based in Sydney, Coburn studied at the National Art School, where he subsequently became a teacher, and eventually Head of School. In the 1960s he was also head of the Canberra School of Technical Art. He has exhibited widely overseas, and is represented in the Australian National Gallery, Canberra, all state and regional galleries, and the Vatican Museum, Rome. He was the winner of the Blake Prize for Religious Art in the 1960's and received an Honorary Doctorate from the James Cook University in 1991 and in 1980 was awarded the Order of Australia.
