Summary
  • These relate to personal and business life and include genealogical material, legal documents, correspondence, diaries, notebooks and miscellaneous items pertaining to family members in Scotland, England, America and Australia. Earlier papers describe life in Inverness, Scotland with references to lineage, real estate holdings, investments, business and legal relations and a large body of correspondence between extended family members and others: these include the Mercer, Robb, Freeman, Mackintosh, Innes, Anderson, Watson, Forbes and Baillie families; major correspondents outside the immediate family include George Mercer, Captain Ferris Charles Robb, John Leonard Freeman, George David Mackintosh, Andrew Mackintosh, Robert Urquhart Innes, Dr John George Innes, Margaret Innes, John Colvin, Andrew John Macritchie, Peter Anderson and Dr John McWhirter; major correspondents of the immediate family include James Snr, Peter, Andrew Macintosh, James, Jnr., Margaret, Georgiana Blunt and Andrew Vernon Suter and Eliza Robb. Family and business correspondence describes life during this earlier period with details of health, death, general hardships, war, trade and economic life, and overall familial relations (e.g. Peter Suter was a surgeon who served in Calcutta). Later papers mainly relate to the life of Andrew Vernon Suter and family in Australia, 1845-1939. A. V. Suter married Charlotte Fisher and they settled on a sheep and cattle station in the Port Fairy district. The diaries, correspondence, financial records, notes and journals of Andrew and Charlotte Suter, 1844-1905, provide an interesting and detailed account of pioneering life in Victoria, with descriptions of economic and social conditions, financial and physical hardships, both men's and women's roles in this nineteenth century rural context, community life in Port Fairy (Belfast) until the 1890s, and later life at Moonee Ponds; also includes a description of A. V. Suter's voyage to Australia in 1845; references to purchase of Castle Maddie, Yambuk and Talara respectively and squatting life of sons, James Vernon and Andrew Victor Suter, at Hughenden, Queensland. Other references to Nerringthume station, a list of deaths in Yambuk 1862-1973; station purchases from Robert and William Jamieson, John Pearson; lease to William Robertson and lease from William Powling; references to local families include Steward, Darke, Monkhouse, Watson, Antill, Boyd, Burrowes, Lydiard, Hutton, Gladstone, Fishbourne, Duncan, Learmonth, McMillan, McKinnon, Calvert, Dawson, Manifold, Mason, Mowbray and Carfrue families; journeys of A. V. Suter to Portland, Geelong, Eumeralla and neighbouring areas. Miscellaneous papers include correspondence and general items concerning Fanny, Eliza, Georgiana, James Vernon, Charlotte, Isabella, Andrew Victor, Isabella Innes, Mabel, Ronald and Percy Suter; correspondence and journal of Eliza Robb (A. V. Suter's mother) with detailed references to Andrew Vernon's early life in Scotland and India, death of his father, Andrew McIntosh Suter and remarriage of his mother to Captain Robb. General references to the Port Fairy district include school building projects, Yambuk Cemetery Trust, St John's Anglican Church and St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Belfast, and Koroit Steam Navigation Co. Ltd., Warrnambool environs, the ship Casino and the Hermitage; references to settlers include David and Charlotte Fisher, McHaffie family, George and John Mercer, James Richardson, J. B. Were and Sons, Stanley Livingstone Learmonth, John O'Brien Tandy, John Ross, Frederick Thureau, Rev. Arthur Walsh, J. S. Bishop, Hugh Scott, Hugh Mackay and Jennie Forbes; miscellaneous genealogical papers include records of deaths and marriages, photographs, maps, newspaper cuttings, drawings and biographical file on A. V. Suter, wills and assignations from the seventeenth century onwards and miscellaneous details of Boer War, federation and the Mutual Store. Overall an excellent primary source for nineteenth century social history in the context of family life and economic self sufficiency in a rural community. NOTE: A. V. Suter arrived in Victoria in 1845. He and his family lived in the Port Fairy district until 1894 when they moved to Moonee Ponds. Mabel Suter married - McHaffie, Georgiana married Dr Thomson (they reared Mabel's son, Park Orchards McHaffie) and Isabella married Frederick Thureau. The collection includes miscellaneous bank liquidation reports of the 1880s and 1890s. See Box 164 for family tree and genealogical notes.
