Notes
  • Description:  This appears to be a pastiche in the French rococo style depicting Europa and the Bull. In a classical landscape setting, with the sea to the left of the composition, Europa is depicted perched on the reclining white bull. The bull is garlanded with flowers and gazes up at Europa. Putti and handmaidens assist Europa, one crowns her with flowers. Other figures include Mercury spying from a tree, an amorous couple at the right, and a putto riding a garlanded goat to the left. The composition borrows elements from Veronese's paintings of the same subject (Palazzo Ducale, Venice, and National Gallery, NG97).
