Summary
  • In the first excerpt, a village is shown in a mountain valley of Fiji. Two women, a bride and her grandmother, strip fibrous tapa bark and leaves from branches and then coil the bark into rolls. They beat the bark with mallets into cloth for a wedding gown. The bride selects the colors and the grandmother designs and cuts out stencils from banana leaves with scissors. She creates an intricate pattern on the cloth and then they hold up the completed gown. In the second excerpt, three dancers from the Kit Cat Cabaret in London, Myrio, Desha and Barté, dance their interpretation of Rhapsody in blue by George Gershwin. At one point, slow motion is used to show their movements more clearly. In the third excerpt, herds of sheep graze on a vast and arid plain with mountains in the background in New Mexico. The sheep drink at a water hole. Goats are contained in a corral. In the fourth excerpt, various scenes of Hawaii are shown, including a woman and a girl dancing in grass skirts, a ukelele player, surfers riding the waves, and pineapple fields. Paper is lain around the plants in rows to discourage weeds. Workers pick the fruit. The tops are cut off and are planted for the next crop. In the packing plant, workers take pineapples from a conveyor belt and put them into crates. A machine removes the skins and another machine cuts the fruit into slices. Workers place the slices into cans, which are then sealed by a machine.
