Notes
  • Painted as a signboard for a Parisian art dealer named Gersaint, ""Gersaint's Signboard"" became one of Watteau's most significant works. The painting in itself celebrates painting and the social elite who participate in it. The scene, cut in half sometime after 1750, also represents the end of the old age as the portrait of King Louis XIV is being packed away. In this, it also communicates revolutionary themes.
