Notes
  • While the Royal Abbey of St. Denis (1140-4) is deemed the first 'Gothic' church, the reconstructed Cathedral of Chartres (1194-1220), France, is considered the first monument built in the 'High Gothic' style. The Gothic style was achieved in France a) by abandoning the earlier romanesque style's half-round or Roman arch and vault in favor of the pointed arch and vault, which had been created by Byzantine engineers in the AD C6 and which Crusaders brought back from the Holy Land to France, and b) by adding flying buttresses.
