Notes
  • A Psalter or Book of Psalms is a book of the Hebrew Bible with the text of 150 songs, traditionally believed to have been written by the Hebrew King David. The Psalter was used for both public worship and private prayers and, until Books of Hours became common, was the principal book for individual devotions. Psalters sometimes included supplementary texts, such as the litany on this leaf. Each petition in the litany, in this fifteenth century text generally beginning with "ut" or "that," would be followed by a response, such as "Kyrie eleison" or "Lord, have mercy upon us," which is not written here but would have been known to the reader. The catchword "de" is written on the bottom margin of the verso. Catchwords referenced the first word at the top of the following page. Since books written before the fifteenth century often did not have page numbers, catchwords helped keep the different leaves of text in correct order before they were bound together. This leaf has 22 lines.
  • One line illuminated initials are in alternating blue, with red flourishes, and gold, with purple flourishes. Line fillers are in gold and blue with various floral motifs.
