The author Alice Pung reveals her mother's plan to arrange her marriage with the son of a known lady, as per Cambodian Chinese customs, but she resents the attempts to 'arrange her heart'. She is relieved when the boy leaves his studies, but notes that her parents pretend to praise him for it, although they know well that he is unsuitable for their daughter.
