  • Chilean painter, printmaker and draughtsman. On the outbreak of World War II Matta went to NewYork and made contact with American contemporaries such as Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky and Mark Rothko. Matta's first exhibition, in New York (1942), was praised by Breton as one of the high points of the Surrealist vision, and made a powerful impact on the American Abstract Expressionists. After his initial success in New York, Matta began to attract the disapproval of powerful American critics who objected to the figurative elements in Matta's painting, and of the Surrealists, who considered that his work no longer adhered to their tenets. Matta's influences include the work of Picasso, Duchamp and Kandinsky, but also such diverse sources as architectural and engineering drawings, science fiction illustrations and films, comic books and graffiti. Due to his strong political commitment (he was particularly active in denouncing the Pinochet regime in Chile and the US involvement in Latin American politics), Matta often exhibited in factories and in the public buildings of left-wing municipalities rather than in art galleries.
