  • The MS 5654 collection, which was received in two consignments, from London and Rome, ranges from a diary kept as a schoolboy in 1926, to personal and business correspondence, manuscripts and proofs of most of Alan Moorehead's published and unpublished works, notebooks and diaries, photographs, press cuttings and reviews, and background material to his books. Also, a card written by Lucy Moorehead to National Library of Australia Liaison Officer, Ivan Page (34 boxes, 4 fol. boxes, 1 fol. item).
  • The Acc05.076 instalment comprises the VHS video obtained by Ann Moyal from Nine Network Australia "Alan Moorehead and Robert Raymond in Gallipoli - No. 1 of Project 64" (1964). It reveals Moorehead's capacity as a television interviewee and is also considered as one of Raymond's most important documentaries. The instalment also includes a photograph of Moorehead from the documentary (1 folder).
Biography
  • Journalist and author. Alan McCrae Moorehead was born in Croydon, Victoria, in 1910. He worked as a journalist with the Melbourne Herald from 1930-1935, and became a war correspondent with the Daily express, London, in 1936-1945. Moorehead was the author of a wide range of books. His historical works included Gallipoli (1956), and among his biographical works was Montgomery: a biography (1946). He also wrote travel books, including No room in the ark (1959), and The White Nile (1960), as well as novels, including The rage of the vulture (1948). Moorehead died in London in 1983.
