Notes
  • Basket of Apples (ca. 1895) is an excellent example of Cezanne’s distinct post-impressionist style. Although the influence of Impressionism is evident in his loose brushwork, Paul Cezanne’s art is more analytical and centered around achieving permanence and timelessness. He produced many still-lives throughout his career because this genre was perfect for hi experimentations with perspective and portraying volume and solidity. He was so meticulous in his arranging and observing of these scenes that he often had to use fake fruits and flowers because the objects would rot before he completed his project. Cezanne emphasizes the solidity of the natural forms of the biscuits, bottle and apples by simplifying them into color patches of cylinders, cones, and spheres. As part of his preparation, he would study the objects from different viewpoints and here the objects are presented from various vantage points in an attempt to explore how the objects relate to the space around them. His goal was not to represent an optically realistic image but to simultaneously reveal the two-dimensionality of the picture plane and the three-dimensionality of space and volume. Cezanne’s novel style influenced many later artists, particularly Picasso and Braque in their development of Cubism.
