Notes
  • Danube Landscape Near Regensburg (1525) is a typical example of the enchanting landscapes produced by the German painter and printmaker Albrecht Altdorfer. He was an important member of the Danube School, which consisted of artists focusing on landscape painting in the Danube River valley during the beginning of the sixteenth century. His charming, idyllic landscapes were the first since antiquity to completely remove human figures. His many scenes of German and Austrian forests reveal his interest in the shifting properties of light depending on the time of day as well as the season. The artist’s Northern artistic heritage is evident in the great care he took to capture many fine details, such the leaves on the trees. The birds-eye view, tumultuous sky, and soaring, jagged mountains are all elements found in many of his works, and almost appear to be products of the artist’s imagination. However, Altdorfer actually based his landscapes on his examinations of contemporary maps, mostly of the topography in Greece and Egypt.
