Notes
  • In the 14th century BC, Assyria became an independent state and rose to become a major power in Mesopotamia. Beginning in the 9th century BC, Assyrian kings began a period of intense expansion. From the mid-8th to the late 7th century BC, a series of strong Assyrian kings –among them the famous Tiglath-pileser III, Sargon II, and Sennacherib – conquered most of the Middle East, from Egypt to the Persian Gulf.
