Notes
  • The Sistine Chapel is the pope’s private chapel in the Vatican Palace, which was erected between 1473 and 1481 by the architect Giovanni dei Dolci for Pope Sixtus IV. While the chapel's exterior is drab and unadorned, the interior walls and ceiling are decorated with frescoes by many Florentine Renaissance masters. The frescoes on the side walls of the chapel were painted from 1481 to 1483. On the north wall, shown in this image here, the most famous artists of the day, including Perugino, Pinturicchio, Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio, and Cosimo Rosselli, depicted events from the life of Christ. On the south wall are six more frescoes depicting events from the life of Moses by Perugino, Pinturicchio, Botticelli, Domenico and Benedetto Ghirlandaio, Rosselli, Luca Signorelli, and Bartolomeo della Gatta. Above these works, smaller frescoes between the windows depict various popes. Perugino’s famous painting of Christ Delivering the Keys of the Kingdom to Saint Peter exhibits his mastery of linear perspective; On the wall, Botticelli painted the Temptations of Christ and his elegant and beautiful style was in contrast to the empirical and ordered style favored by his contemporaries.
