Notes
  • This image portrays the Chinese character for “jen” written in Chinese calligraphy. Chinese calligraphy is created using an ink stick, an ink stone, a brush, and paper (or silk). The calligrapher, using a combination of technical skill and imagination, creates interesting and beautiful shapes without any retouching or shading and, most importantly, with well-balanced spaces between the strokes. The fundamental inspiration of Chinese calligraphy is nature; in the regular script each stroke and dot suggests the form of a natural object. Before Confucius' time, jen referred to the kindness of rulers to their subjects and overtime gradually broadened to mean benevolence in general. In Confucian philosophy, jen is one of the most fundamental of all virtues, and connotes humaneness, warm-heartedness, or benevolence.
