From before the reign of Ivan IV 'the Terrible' until after the reign of Catherine 'the Great', czars expanded the territory of Russia westward into Europe, southward and eastward into E Asia. Centered in Moscow, the Communist Bloc radiated outward like a spider web: most central: Russia; 2nd circle: other SSRs in USSR ; 3rd circle: E European satellites, 4th circle: Marxist client states ; 5th circle: non-Marxist client states.
