Notes
  • During the twentieth century, Japan developed a unique culture. Japanese society was, and still is, heavily influenced by complex, ancient traditions that solidified during a period of isolation that lasted from the seventeenth century to the mid-nineteenth century. The reopening of Japan to the outside world ushered in a period of intense contact with Western culture and caused unprecedented changes to Japanese society that can still be seen today. After being exposed to Western developments, both politically and technologically, Japan sought to become a modern industrialized nation. In its pursuit for power and development, Japan sought to develop its own overseas empire, which led to confrontation with the United States and its allies, and ultimately to Japan’s defeat in World War II. In the post-war period, Japan experienced spectacular economic growth, and it has become one of the most economically and technologically advanced countries in the world.
