Notes
  • A map of Korea showing Communist North Korea and NATO-affliated South Korea. Korea was one of the first targets of Japanese imperialism. At the end of WWII, Soviet troops occupied Korea above the 38th parallel, while US troops controlled Korea below the 38th parallel. Bolstered with Soviet funds and supplies and with Chinese troops, in June 1950 the North Koreans attacked South Korea, which appealed to NATO. The NATO powers sent thousands of troops to fight in the 'Korean War'. South Korea was saved from Communism, but the death toll included 53,000 Americans, 1 million Koreans and 1 million Chinese, and the countryside and economy of Korea were ravaged. The Korean War was one of several conflicts which represented the 'Cold War' becoming 'hot'.
