Notes
  • Albrecht Dürer completed a number of self-portraits throughout his life and this specific one, painted in 1498 highlights the changes in his artistic style as well as his self-awareness as a result of his travels to Italy in 1494. In stark contrast to his previous self-portrait painted only five years earlier, Dürer painted himself here with obvious confidence and self-assurance, as expressed in his alert direct gaze and tightly clasped fingers. Upon his return to Nuremberg, Dürer was elevated to a status rivaling members of the upper class of the city and he presented himself as an aristocrat and gentleman, dressed in expensive clothes with meticulously groomed hair. His well-bred manners and elegance are emphasized by his erect posture. Durer's self-portrait holds the artist's description "I made this according to my appearance when I was 26." The elegant costume he wears and contemplative expression on his face combine for a dual aura of visual enchantment andcognitive inspection
