Notes
  • Digital copy of a page of Martin Luther’s famous German Psalter written sometime between 1527-1529. The most famous of the hymns commonly attributed to him, it is entitled “Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott” (“A Safe Stronghold Our God Is Still” or “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”) and is taken from one of the Psalms. The Latin words about Luther's name read "God: our refuge and strength" Hymns played an important role in the Reformation movement, as a means of praise, a form of instruction about important doctrines, and a vehicle for popular participation in church services for the illiterate as well as the literate. Luther realized the importance of vernacular hymns and in addition to creating his own, he also encouraged his friends to write them. "Ein' Feste Burg" remains one of the most well-known and loved hymns in all Christianity.
