Notes
  • Chinese silk cloth was so popular in the Near East & Europe (among elite strata of the population, who could afford to buy the import) that two major trade routes developed to supply the demand. The northern, land route (the black line on the map) was called the 'Silk Road.' The southern, maritime route (blue line) included silk among other Chinese & Oriental luxury goods like spices, porcelain, tea & rice. Chinese silk cloth was so expensive to buy that Near Easterners & Europeans tried to acquire silkworms from China along with Chinese silk-weaving technology. Among other places, Damascus (Syria) maintained a group of silkweavers who became quite proficient.
